Robots: The Future is Here!

"Emotions influence every aspect of our lives, from how we learn and communicate to how we make decisions. In a world that too often revolves around online communication, the pitfalls of relying too heavily on digital experiences can impact not just how we interact with machines, but with each other" (Kaliouby, 2016).

The growing topic of robots within the work place is controversial for different reasons. Many are uninterested in the robot interface and refute the practice. Although there are many benefits that have been explored and expressed, there is no concise analysis on whether or not the use of robots will have positive effects.

In some applications, the use of robots seems more applicable. For example, delivery drones are already being used to distribute packages and mail in some areas. While there are many obstacles to a flawless robotic delivery system, the system seems to be working well and Robots will likely oblige for 90% of the work force delivery by the year 2020.

In other applications, there is continuous debate towards the benefit of Robotic workers. One of the most controversial use of Robotic workers is within United States Airports. Users are afraid of the dehumanization that Robotic costumer service will bring. Robots will provide programmed and scheduled service rather than intuitive and sensory based service.

Is Coworking working?

"Coworking…is absolutely not about desks or wi-fi or coffee—most of us have access to a desk and wifi and coffee at home. Coworking is truly about being surrounded by a diverse group of peers….Coworking helps us to balance personal and professional, work and play, independence and collaboration" (Burns- 2016).

America is changing, and so is the work space. The typical notion of an office is being redesigned, questioned, and flipped on its head. There are many factors into understanding whether or not the coworking environment is beneficial to the business owner. One of the biggest arguments supporting the coworking lifestyle is the idea of collaboration. As users determine the value of coworking it is important to ask these questions:

- Is collaboration in this setting relevant to my business?
- Am I willing to mix work and play?
- Do I need a better support network?

What is your opinion about the rise in coworking offices? Check out the full article below.

The Rise of Teams

10/21/2016

"The days of the top-down hierarchical organization are slowly coming to an end, but changing the organization chart is only a small part of the transition to a network of teams. The larger, more important, and more urgent part is to change how an organization actually works. Now, more than ever, is the time to challenge traditional organizational structures, empower teams, hold people accountable, and focus on building a culture of shared information, vision, and shared direction".

As businesses reinvent themselves, there is a fast-moving approach to "team concept" model. While not all businesses are in need of a team model, the approach is both interesting and has already been influential. Much of the transformation within the office focuses on the decentralization of authority, and drives the push to move towards a network of teams.

The idea is that each team will still have a leader that is most influential in driving the team towards their specific goal. This concept is meant to allow for a variety of minds to touch one project and hopefully improve on the method of output for the company, while still remaining functional and delivering to the leader what needs to be accomplished.

The rise of teams within the office is a world-wide concept that has both benefits and drawbacks. This new format for a working space is developing at this very moment. What are your thoughts on the rise of teams within the workplace?

"As digital marketing becomes ever more visual, how can we make sure we stay ahead of the trend?"

Have you ever wondered how companies are able to track trends before they hit the mainstream? Shuttershock, a stock photo company, reveals their methods through this article.

Shuttershock is constantly refreshing their content in order to remain recent and trendy. They have a team of researchers that are always on the look out for the next big thing. Their method of analyzation is the core to how the company works. As social media takes over the world of marketing, it is important for companies to stay in the loop. The Shuttershock team uses their own website to predict trends by viewing what users are searching for the most. Then, they create "popular" pages to reveal the top trends. This invites a stream of users to the Shuttershock website, which increases their market. It is also a good research method for understanding what their users are interested in.

As digital marketing becomes more visual, it is important that companies are remaining in the stream of trends. Take a look at this article to see some of the Shuttershock 2016 trend predictions!

An Ergonomics Approach to Avoiding Office Workplace Injuries and Illnesses

"Understanding your work environment is essential. So is gaining control over certain aspects of your surroundings, such as user-adjustable chairs and lighting levels".

As we continue to learn more about ergonomics, it is important that we also understand the importance of developing our behavior while in the work place. Remaining educated on ergonomic considerations can prevent injuries and illnesses over a period of time.

  • "Change your body position periodically throughout the day.
  • Use a document stand to reduce the amount of neck twisting or bending forward if typing from a source document.
  • Position your keyboard directly in front of you and at approximately elbow height. This should enable you to type with straight wrists. If this is not possible with the keyboard atop the work surface, use an adjustable-height keyboard tray.
  • Center your monitor with your keyboard and chair.
  • Avoid ear-to-shoulder neck positioning while on the phone.  Use a telephone headset that will allow you to work on the computer with good posture while on the phone.
  • Rearrange the work area to avoid excess bending, stooping, and reaching.
  • Try to relax. Many injuries and painful episodes arise from continuously tensing your neck and shoulder muscles while working."

"As work becomes more mobile, office designs change and buildings adapt" by Kristen Leigh Painter Star Tribune

Technology has had a large impact on the office landscape. Employees now have the ability to do their work from places other than a desk. Offices are now becoming more open, encouraging employee interaction and small gatherings to promote the sharing of ideas. Read the entire article here.

"...Offices are smaller and more open, so employees can roam around but remain engaged. Time for personal matters is provided without question, as bosses realize their colleagues also work at home during times when they feel they can be productive."

“Space is a tool. And people, your most expensive asset, are a tool that need to work well,” said Janet Pogue McLaurin, principal at the architectural firm Gensler. “So you want to create a work environment where people work their best”

Technology shapes space

For decades, the “open” concept in offices meant warrens of cubicles that came to symbolize employee disposability and uniformity. Now, cubicles aren’t entirely gone, but they are designed with lower walls and broken up by common areas for small gatherings and even rooms when someone needs more privacy.

A big difference is in office technology. Computers have shrunk — from mainframes to desktops to laptops to phones. This means workers can do more with less space, reducing the total square footage required for a company to do business. And with wireless Internet now an office mainstay, workers are no longer tied to a static location...

OID partnered with Teknion to be the grand sponsor of the gala event and also is proud to have furnished much of the lounge furniture in this beautiful newly built headquarters.  It was a pleasure spending time with the A&D community and to watch their organization honor Bob Ripley, of the Nebraska Capitol Commission, for his dedication and service to the Nebraska AIA.

We love all these great tips from Inc. magazine on how organizations can make changes to their office spaces in order to promote collaboration and increase employees ability to focus and also inspire creativity!

"......Collaborative Workspaces

Tech leaders, such as Google and Dropbox, are known for bringing open-office design concepts to fruition. They have found that innovation is at its best when employees are working en masse. Workspaces need to be designed to encourage diverse methods of collaboration in order to develop new ideas and move concepts forward.

We decided to encourage employee interaction by replacing cubicles with large desks that can accommodate multiple people. Informal lounge areas were established to allow for more spontaneous conversations and brainstorming between employees of different departments. We took advantage of vertical space by adding ample whiteboards and allowing employees to use glass walls and windows to visually communicate spur of the moment ideas.

Open workspaces help to create a broader sense of community and are an easy way to promote innovation.

Multipurpose Spaces That Promote Playfulness

Most people tend to ditch their lighthearted, spirited nature for a more professional representation of themselves at work. This can unintentionally smother creativity. Creativity is at its peak when employees enjoy a high level of comfort with their peers. Playfulness can break down barriers of self-consciousness and ultimately help foster new ideas. This is why we now see many larger companies including amenities such as basketball courts, slides, and sand volleyball pits.......

The Best & Worst Office Design by the Washington Post

7/8/2015

Picture
This interesting article has many fascination  points on the history of office design, but it is no surprise that they state the number one driver for current office design is: technology. Past office design revolved around workers sitting at desks with pens and paper -- today's work space should look and feel very different.
"....Office designers have been trying to adapt offices for decades to better suit the nature of work, as well as meet company demands for cost-cutting and integrating new technology. Over the 20th century, the most popular office design has evolved from rows of offices with doors, to an open plan designed to facilitate collaboration, to the cubicle, back to an open office plan, and now to more mixed-used spaces."

"......The way we think about working has had a huge influence on office design: Whether companies are trying to encourage collaboration, preserve employee privacy, or reward their upper-level managers. But there are other factors that have guided the shifts in office design – namely, technological development and cost concerns."

".....
The primary issue with open office plans is that there are so many visual and audio distractions that can interrupt worker focus. In a study of 90,000 people from 155 companies, Gensler found that individual focus was the most important factor in an employee’s effectiveness in the workplace. The company also found that focus was the activity least effectively supported by current office design."

"HOW TO DESIGN AN OFFICE FOR MAXIMIZING EMPLOYEE HAPPINESS" by Fast Company

7/7/2015

Another great article on the importance of a well executed office work space from Lydia Dishman @ Fast Company. My favorite remarks below -- for the full article, click here!

".....Workspaces should flex to provide a variety of spaces and destinations for workers to inhabit that promote movement throughout the day," said Blumenfeld in a statement. "While many companies are doing a good job of incorporating some of these elements into their workplace design, there’s a need for more awareness and implementation of this way of thinking holistically about the workplace. Ethonomicsillustrates that it’s the incorporation of a number of these key elements and initiatives at all scales that will provide an architecture for workplace happiness."

More attention needs to be placed on remedies for the preponderance of technology and the unintentional loss of productivity brought on by vast open offices or warrens of cubicles washed in a coat of gray or beige paint and illuminated by fluorescent bulbs."

"....Alert, engaged, and healthy workers are most often those who are afforded a stimulating and inspiring work environment that encourages movement—to sit, stand and walk around," they write. "We are more alert after taking a walk with a coworker or friend—and perhaps having an insightful conversation. And that feeling of well-being is likely to affect the way we interact with others—less negative feelings and fewer expressions of anger, irritation, or resentment."
